Anita’s Biography ‘My East End’
In this, her first book, she tells of her childhood and what it was
like growing up in the East End, The Story of the East End (The East End
Villages, The East End news etc) The Real East Enders, The Local Pubs,
Cockney Food, The Famous Markets, East End Entertainment, EastEnders and the
changing East End and much more. There are many photographs of Anita as a
baby, with her family, of the East End itself some of the blitzed streets of
World War 2 etc!
‘My East End’ was published by Pavilion Books in association with Michael
Joseph Limited in 1987 and reached the top ten best sellers list. Although

award for Best Take-over role in ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ 2005

acknowledgement is really important and I’m very grateful to

2007 - on 27 July ... was honoured for her work
with Lipa students. Anita was presented with a special 'companionship' award
by Sir Paul McCartney at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall - for assisting
students in question and answer and masterclass sessions and being a
supporter of Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
Anita's acceptance speech which she told the students - " Never give
up your dreams" and despite coming from a poor background she was now "an
established actress and married to a doctor of science and rock god Brian
May"
The Water Rats Honour Anita, The Grand Order of Water Rats gave Anita
the Show Business Personality of the Year Award at their Annual Water Rats

Anita was also nominated in 2004 for an Olivier Award her role as Nancy in
the play ‘Frozen’ at the Royal National Theatre.
Other Notable Achievements and Acclaim:-
Anita was made an honorary member of Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1986.
In 1986, at the height of the popularity of ‘EastEnders’, Anita, experienced
‘personal appearance phenomenon’. She was constantly in demand to perform
various functions ranging from opening supermarkets, Banks and showrooms to
launching a London sightseeing bus and switching on the Christmas lights in
London’s famous Oxford Street with Leslie Grantham.
In 1993 Anita was appointed by the satellite/cable channel, UK GOLD, and
asked to become Honorary President of the UK GOLD VIP Club, she accepted and
the Presidency ran for a year.
During 1986 the characters of Den & Angie Watts dominated the ‘EastEnders’
storylines. The shattering conclusion to their turbulent marriage came on
Christmas day when Den presented Angie with divorce papers as her gift. The
episode made television ratings history. An astonishing 31.5 million viewers
tuned in - the highest figure ever recorded in Britain. In May 1998, ‘Inside
Soap’ magazine ranked the storyline 10th in it’s chart of ‘The 100 Greatest
Soap Stories Ever Told’.
The following year Channel 4 and the Observer polled the British public and
a panel of TV experts to compile a list of The 100 Greatest TV Moments. The
scene in which Den gives Angie divorce papers was voted 24th alongside such
world events as the funeral of Diana Princess of Wales, the landing of Man
on the Moon, the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth 11 and the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
An ITV special programme, ‘Christmas Soap Secrets’ broadcast at Christmas
1999 asked a panel of soap opera experts to compile the definitive Top Ten
Christmas Soap Storylines Ever. The Den and Angie divorce papers storyline
topped the chart, beating off competition from ‘Coronation Street’,
‘Emmerdale’ and Brookside for the number one position.
2007 ...Anita is named
Patron of Arts Academy
Anita became Patron of the Suffolk Academy of Dance
and Performing Arts. It came after Anita played the wicked queen in Snow
White at Ipswich's Regent Theatre in 2006/07 and worked with 16 of the
Academy's students on the pantomime. The academy's principle said "Anita was
so impressed not only with the students' performances but also their
attitude and behaviour that, when invited, she was 'thrilled to be your
patron' and asked for the students to be congratulated on a job
'fantastically well done'.
